Shannon joined NSMI as Nurse Practitioner in June 2012. She received both her master and doctorate degrees in Nursing from George Mason University. She completed an Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner concentration through Duke University in 2014. She completed several years of concentrated Orthopaedic residency training before joining NSMI.
She has been practicing in the nursing field for almost 20 years. She has a wide variety of nursing experience including Emergency, Cardiac, ICU, and Family Practice. Her interests include pediatric and adolescent sports medicine injury management and prevention; martial arts training and safety education.
Her doctoral project was the creation of an interactive evidence-based physical therapy and nutrition website: www.sportsinjuryandnutrition.org which provides sport-specific home exercise programs for multiple body parts and injuries.
Shannon Nicholson is currently an affiliate faculty for the George Mason University and has been adjunct faculty for The George Washington University Nurse Practitioner Programs. She is also one of our non-operative Sports Medicine Preceptors for The National Sports Medicine Institute Athletic Training Residency Program.
Shannon takes a team-based approach to practice, working alongside the Drs. Johnson to provide her patients with the best possible outcomes. She enjoys educating her patients and their families on all aspects of their care to ensure their success.
