The National Sports Medicine Institute offers a wide range of core and subspecialty academic sessions, and recruits distinguished speakers from both the institutes clinical staff and the local community.
Academic sessions are regularly held to discuss a variety of topics that focus on the natural history, etiology, surgery, rehabilitation, and treatment of sport-related injuries. In addition to academic sessions, there are numerous opportunities such as:
  • Grand Rounds
  • Athletic Training and sport-specific meetings
  • Radiology and Imaging meetings

Grand Rounds

Institute-wide lecture given once a month on topics applicable to all residents across all residency programs and faculty. Attendance is required of both faculty and residents.

Radiology and Imaging Meetings

Occurs once a month. Presented by Athletic Training residents with the program director, and teaching faculty in attendance. A representative physician from Radiology Imaging Associates of Lansdowne is present. Pertinent subspecialists as related to the case are invited and participate in the discussion. A case from the Orthopaedic clinic is reviewed, followed by pertinent radiology and surgical intervention discussion. Subspecialists assist with questions related to specialty specific management.

Case Studies

Cases from the Orthopaedic clinical service are presented by residents. Program director, attending faculty and subspecialists are in attendance. These cases are used to highlight development of critical thinking skills. We encourage the audience to develop a broad differential diagnosis and teach the immediate management of the primary diagnosis.

Athletic Training and sport-specific meetings

Occurs about twice a month. Athletic Training Residents provide interactive case based lectures on core topics in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine as they correspond with the programs curriculum.

Conferences and Symposium

Our comprehensive Annual Sports Medicine Conference provides in-depth, multi-disciplinary approach to address and enhance sports medicine healthcare providers with current information regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injuries in the athletic population.  This includes learning labs available for practice, refinement, and continued education.

Our conferences include both lecture and lab components. We aim to explore the underlying evidence and implications of ‘best practices’ in the care of the injured athlete.  The labs activities include hands-on practice with equipment as well as clinical integration. Our faculty are always available to provide feedback, allowing attendees the opportunity to leave the session with proficiency in the learned techniques.
